Stanley Tucci’s Passion Was Acting. Now, It’s Food.

Some of those rituals appear to have changed as a result of the tumor’s recovery. He made a risotto Milanese for his co-star, Colin Firth, when they worked on the film “Supernova,” which was released earlier this year. Firth said in an email that it was the best he’d ever had, but Tucci “was convinced it tasted awful and was mortified.”

“He just wasn’t tasting what we were,” Firth explained. “One could only imagine how distressing this was, because he put on a brave and matter-of-fact face most of the time.”

Tucci watched cooking shows while recovering, “which was strange because even the smell of food then would just make me want to throw up,” he said. “However, I enjoyed watching them. I just wanted to learn more about them and live vicariously through them. It was a way for me to have that once more.”

He claimed that the treatment had provided a culinary benefit. He’d discovered he was lactose intolerant and couldn’t digest sugar well when he was in his twenties. Those issues appear to have vanished.

But it was clear that he had a long way to go. Tucci reached into his jacket at the start of the interview in a movie theater near his home and pulled out a rooibos tea bag to add to water, explaining that regular tea had too many tannins (“It makes my mouth so dry, it’s like eating chalk”).

When he’s feeling better and it won’t feel like work, he fantasizes about eating steak, pad thai, dal, and sushi. Until then, his CNN series had been renewed for a second season, and dinner needed to be made. He had already decided what he was going to make.

“Just some pasta with fresh tomato and shrimp, a little shrimp stock, some basil, and then we can throw a salad on the side,” Tucci said, gazing up at the ceiling as if imagining the meal ahead. His eyes shone brightly.
