Prince Harry Accuses Royals Of Neglect
Oprah Winfrey reported that Prince Harry’s family refused to assist with the barrage of media and social media abuse directed at his wife, Meghan Markle.
“I thought my family would help, but every single ask, request, warning, whatever it is, just got met with total silence or total neglect,” the Duke of Sussex said in an interview for the Apple TV docuseries The Me You Can’t See, which debuted on the streaming platform on Friday.
“That was one of the biggest reasons to leave,” he said, referring to the couple’s decision to retire from royal life. “Feeling trapped and controlled by fear, both by the media and by the [royal] system, which never encouraged the discussion of such trauma. But I will never be bullied into silence again.”
He stated that he felt compelled to remove his family from royal life after the Duchess of Sussex told him that she was suicidal while 6 months pregnant with their son, Archie, and he knew that he “wasn’t going to get from [his] family”
“I then had a son who I’d far rather be solely focused on, rather than every time I look in his eyes wonder whether my wife is going to end up like my mother and I’m going to have to look after him myself,” he explained.
The interview began streaming a day after Harry and his brother, Prince William, blasted media culture, specifically the BBC, for contributing to their mother’s death by hounding her and preying on her “fear, paranoia, and isolation.”
Harry told Oprah that watching Meghan’s treatment by the media reminded him of how he felt as a child watching his mother being pursued by the paparazzi “every single day until the day she died.”
He also stated that the advent of social media platforms, as well as Meghan’s biracial status, added “a whole new depth” to the constant media abuse.
“My mother was murdered because she was in a relationship with someone who was not white [Dodi Al-Fayed]. And now take a look at what’s happened. Do you want to discuss how history repeats itself? “They won’t stop until she dies,” he said. “It’s extremely upsetting to think that I might lose another woman in my life. As an example, the list is growing. And it all boils down to the same people, business model, and industry.”
Harry has previously spoken out against the British media, particularly the outlets, including tabloids, that comprise the royal family’s official press system, known as the “Royal Rota,” for what he claims is biased, unfair, and racist coverage of Meghan. He and his wife have also taken legal action against the tabloids for invasions of privacy. (Harry’s lawsuit against the owners of the UK tabloids the Sun, Mirror, and the now-defunct News of the World for alleged phone hacking is still ongoing; Meghan effectively won her lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday and Daily Mail publishers for printing a letter she sent to her estranged father.)
Immediately after stepping away from royal life, Harry and Meghan’s press team effectively cut off the four tabloids on the Royal Rota — the Sun, Mirror, Mail, and Express — establishing a policy of “no corroboration and zero engagement.”” In a statement released on April 19, 2020, Harry and Meghan stated that they would not “offer themselves up as currency for an economy of clickbait and distortion.”
After meeting Meghan, the prince told Winfrey that starting therapy made him realize he had “been living in a bubble within this family, within this institution, and I was sort of almost trapped in a thought process or a mindset.”
“That sense of being trapped within the family is — there was no way out. When I finally made that decision for my family, I was still told, ‘You can’t do this,’ and I thought to myself, ‘Well, how bad does it have to get before I’m allowed to do this?’ She was going to take her own life. It shouldn’t have come to this “He stated.
Harry also specifically chastised his father, Prince Charles, for raising him and his brother to believe that constant media abuse and the toll it takes on one’s mental health was a normal part of being a member of the royal family.
““When I was younger, my father used to say to both William and me, ‘Well, it was like that for me, so it’s going to be like that for you,’” Harry explained. “That makes no sense! It is not necessary for your children to suffer because you have suffered. In fact, the opposite is true. If you have suffered, do everything you can to ensure that whatever… negative experiences you have had are made right for your children.”
“We chose to prioritize our mental health. That is what we are doing and will continue to do,” Harry stated. “Isn’t it about breaking the cycle? Isn’t it all about preventing history from repeating itself? That whatever pain and suffering you have experienced, you do not pass on?”
The prince and Winfrey have been working on The Me You Can’t See since 2019.
