Photos Show Scale Of Massive Wildfires Ravaging Greece
Hundreds of wildfires have forced people to flee Greece as the country struggles to regain control of the natural disaster.
Wildfires have forced residents and their animals onto ferries and into temporary shelters on the Greek island of Evia, which produces many staples such as olives, figs, and honey.
“These last few days have been among the most difficult in our country’s history,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
“We are dealing with a natural disaster of epic proportions.” The causes of the fires are unknown, but they are inextricably linked to human-caused climate change.
According to NASA, the planet has already warmed 2.1 degrees since 1880, exacerbating the frequency and scale of natural disasters.
The duration of wildfire seasons is lengthening. And heat waves are becoming hotter, more frequent, and longer in duration.
These images depict the bravery of those fighting to extinguish the flames, as well as the hardships of those fleeing, who are carrying personal belongings and animals that have been injured or burned.
