We Treat The Following Knee Problems:

Osteoarthrosis (arthritis)

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of joint disease, and one of the most usually affected joints is the knee.

Meniscal Tears

A meniscus tear is usually caused by twisting or turning quickly, often with the foot planted while the knee is bent.

Knee ligament injuries

You can injure a ligament through a sharp change in direction, landing wrong from a jump, or a blunt force hit to the knee.

Knee tendonitis

You’ll notice pain at the bottom edge of your kneecap, or just below it. This usually comes on gradually rather than suddenly.

Knee dislocation

The first thing people see when they have dislocated their knee is the look; it will normally look very odd and out of place.

Knee bursitis

In general, the affected portion of your knee might feel warm, tender and swollen when you put pressure on it.

ISKSAA JOHANNESBURG TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP

October 23rd 2017 to November 10th 2017

To begin, we would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr. Lalit Maini, and ISKSAA for making this fellowship possible.

We are grateful to Prof Ponky Firer for inviting us to visit the Linksfield Knee Clinic at Netcare Linksfield Hospital in Johannesburg for three weeks.

On October 23rd, we arrived in Johannesburg at O R Tambo International Airport on a beautiful Monday morning.
Because October marks the beginning of summer in Johannesburg, the weather was pleasant and soothing.
Our transport assistance met us at the airport and dropped us off at the hospital.

Prof Ponky introduced us to his team, with whom we would be spending three weeks, and then we had a brief discussion about his thoughts on Kinematic balancing / alignment in Total Knee Replacement.
This was followed by our transfer to the B&B that would serve as our home for the next three weeks!!!

Prof Ponky not only arranged for our stay, but was also gracious enough to assist us with the costs.

Various knee surgeries, including total and unicondylar knee replacement, patellofemoral replacement, High tibial osteotomy, and arthroscopic ligament reconstruction surgeries, were witnessed (and scrubbed in) over the next three weeks.

We also got to see Dr Brad Gelbart perform various knee arthroscopic surgeries at Netcare Linksfield and Netcare Rosebank Hospitals.
We were able to observe almost all types of Meniscal repair (bucket handle repairs, root repairs, ramp lesions) with all possible techniques—all inside and out—which was one of our anticipated goals from this fellowship.

Prof Ponky was receptive to our doubts, points of view, and counterpoints in the outpatient clinic, so our learning was not limited to the operating room.
We were fortunate enough to be present with him during his consultations.

Our visit to Cadaver and Skill Lab in Durban was the highlight of our Fellowship.
We spent a good 6 hours at the cadaver lab for knee arthroscopy, thanks to Prof Ponky who arranged for the cadaver workshop, where we got to use implants for meniscal repair and acl reconstruction.
He gave us a good demonstration and we had a good discussion about the nuances of ligament reconstruction around the knee.

We had decided to spend the weekends exploring Joburg, and it was a lot of fun taking the bus tour around the city.
At the Lions Park, we also got a glimpse of African wildlife.

Overall, the Jo’Burg fellowship experience was both educational and entertaining.
Fellowships are always an opportunity to learn about advances in one’s field and to encounter new cultures—the Jo’Burg fellowship provided both.

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Prof Ponky Firer, Dr Brad Gelbart and his team – Ms Lynette, Ms Salome, and the Netcare hospital staff – for their assistance and support throughout our fellowship.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dhawal Bakhda is an orthopaedic consultant at Shalby Hospitals in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Dr. Sohail Abbas is an orthopaedic consultant at Adiva Hospital in New Delhi.
