John McAfee Dead In Spain After Extradition Ruling

John McAfee, the eccentric tech billionaire who made his fortune developing antivirus software, was discovered dead in a jail cell near Barcelona on Wednesday, just hours after Spain’s National Court ruled that he would be extradited to the United States to face tax evasion charges. He was 75 years old.

El Pais broke the news of his death, reporting that he committed suicide. An official then confirmed his death to the Associated Press, citing a Catalan government statement stating that a 75-year-old US citizen awaiting extradition could not be resuscitated.

McAfee was arrested in Spain last October and charged with failing to pay millions of dollars in income taxes in Tennessee from 2014 to 2018. He was also charged by federal investigators in Manhattan for his involvement in a “pump and dump” cryptocurrency scheme.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Spanish court ruled that McAfee would be extradited, despite his claims for months that the charges against him were politically motivated and intended to ensure he never left prison again.

The tax evasion charges were not McAfee’s first involvement in a criminal investigation. McAfee was wanted in Belize in 2012 for questioning in connection with the murder of his neighbor.

McAfee had been tweeting from prison for months.

McAfee claimed to have fathered 47 children during his lifetime after selling his software company in the 1990s.

“Father of many, loved by few,” his wife Janice wrote in a Father’s Day letter posted on Twitter on Sunday.

She claimed in the letter that the US government was “determined to have John die in prison to make an example of him for speaking out against the corruption within their government agencies.”
