Gymnast Will Compete In Balance Beam Final
Simone Biles will compete in the balance beam final on Tuesday, her first competition since withdrawing from multiple competitions due to mental health issues, USA Gymnastics announced Monday morning.
Last Tuesday, the superstar gymnast withdrew from the team final in the middle of the vault after stumbling on landing. Biles later stated in a press conference that she did not feel mentally prepared for the event.
“I was just shaking and couldn’t sleep. I’d never felt this way before entering a competition, and I tried to enjoy myself here “Biles stated.
USA Gymnastics announced on Wednesday that Biles had also withdrawn from the individual all-around competition “in order to focus on her mental health.”
“We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being,” USA Gymnastics said at the time. “Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”
On Friday, Biles posted a Q&A on Instagram as well as a practice video to further explain her situation. She explained that the mental block began at random the morning following the preliminary competitions.
“For anyone who thinks I’ve given up. I didn’t quit because my mind and body are simply out of sync “She put pen to paper.
Biles’ only chance at an Olympic medal will be in the balance beam final.
