Du Plessis scores 86 to help Dhoni’s Chenni beat the Knight Riders to win the T20 league.
Chennai Super Kings won their fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) title with a 27-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the final in Dubai, thanks to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy.
When they batted, Chennai amassed 192-3, with opener Faf du Plessis anchoring their innings with 86 off 59 balls, earning him the man-of-the-match award on Friday.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, the tournament’s leading scorer, made 32 and went on to win the orange cap.
Robin Uthappa (31) and Moeen Ali (37 not out) provided useful cameos to help Chennai post an impressive total.
The second half of this year’s IPL was held in the United Arab Emirates last month, following a suspension in India in May due to COVID-19.
Kolkata, led by England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan, got off to a fast start, with openers Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer both hitting fifty.
Gill hit 51 and Iyer hit 50 before the wheels fell off their innings, and Kolkata, cruising at 91-0 in the 11th over, eventually finished on 165-9.
Shardul Thakur (3-38) bowled a two-wicket over to dismiss Iyer and Nitish Rana, and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja also bowled a two-wicket over to rip the heart out of Kolkata’s middle order.
All-rounder Jadeja also made two spectacular deep catches as Chennai, who missed the playoffs for the first time last year, went on to win the title.
“We shuffled a few players, we used them in different ways,” Dhoni explained after receiving the trophy.
“It was critical to accept responsibility, and we had match-winners showing up and performing game after game.”
